Witch in Danger Page 17
“Miaow,” came the faint noise from the bedroom.
I frowned and walked to the door, then froze. In the crack between door and wall, I glimpsed Sky on the bed, pinning the pixie beneath one paw.
“Don’t!” I flung the door wide and made a lunge for the bed. Sky let go of the pixie, who spun in circles, shedding glitter everywhere. Before I could catch him, he made a beeline for the window and fluttered out of sight. “Oh, no.”
“Blair!” Alissa pointed to the bed, where a crumpled note lay.
I picked it up, my heart beating against my ribcage.
I apologise for failing to meet you the other day. As a fairy, I have permission to leave the LFPF on two days per year—the summer and winter solstices—as they are important events for us. While I would have been accompanied by prison guards, I very much wanted to see you, but I understand that the town was in considerable danger. I’m very glad to hear that the danger has passed and that you are safe.
If you want to contact me, send word with the pixie.
The note wasn’t signed.
My mouth hung open for a moment. “I… I don’t know how to make sense of this, but… I think it might be from my father.” Which meant he’d been the one to leave the other notes.
Alissa took the paper from my hand, exclaiming, “The LPFP. Lancashire Prison for Paranormals. You’re right. He mustn’t have signed the note in case it fell into the wrong hands.”
I nodded mutely.
Alissa went on, “So they let him out at the solstice… I think the solstices are important to fairies, for some reason. That’s what my grandmother said.”
“She didn’t tell me that. Oh, never mind. My father’s locked up, and now it turns out he did want to see me, it’s nearly six whole months until the next solstice.”
“I think that cat of yours can deal with the situation,” she said. “He got that note to you somehow, right?”
“Or the pixie.”
I looked at the window, then at Sky. “I hope you didn’t scare him off for good.”
“Miaow.” Sky jumped off the bed and rubbed himself against my legs. He couldn’t have said you’re my human more obviously if he’d spoken aloud.
Despite myself, I found myself smiling. “You know, I think we might be okay.”
